The Spanish mango harvest in Malaga is still almost two months away, although the first forecasts of the Spanish Tropical Association suggest that volumes could be very similar to those of the 2020 campaign.
"While last year was expected to be an 'On year' for the mango harvest, the weather caused a considerable reduction in the volumes and shortened the campaign," says Javier Braun, president of the Spanish Tropical Association.
"This year we expected a much larger production than last year; a record-breaking one, in fact, as younger plantations are now reaching full maturity, but the truth is that the flowering has been affected by the weather and there is great disparity in the yields, depending on the producing area. Therefore, we do not expect the production to exceed 32,000 tons. In recent years, there seems to be increasingly less homogeneity in the blooms," says the representative of this association.
According to Javier Braun, the area planted with mangoes remains stable, following the trend of recent seasons. "Water resources are limited in the Axarquia of Malaga, so, although there is always some new small mango plantation, producers tend to prefer avocados, as their consumption is growing significantly every year."
The predominant variety in Spain, accounting for more than 50% of the total, is the Osteen, due to its productivity and taste qualities, although late varieties such as the Keitt and Palmer are becoming increasingly interesting for growers due to the advantages they bring after the end of the Osteen's production peaks. At the same time, there is less interest in the Kent variety because of its very irregular yields.
Mango consumption continues to grow in Spain. Mango prices remain affordable for the consumer and this also plays an important role in boosting the demand.
