Marina Iblea

An abnormal season where nothing has gone as expected

"Thanks to our innovative facilities and state-of-the-art processing lines, we manage to guarantee 200-250 pallets a day with the produce grown in our over 100 hectares of protected crops," proudly explains Giorgio Licitra from Marina Iblea.

"Marina Iblea always guarantees constant supplies and high-quality. As for yellow and red bell peppers, the recent high prices are making us hopeful that quotations will provide a fair remuneration for our investments. The table tomato season is proceeding with our prestigious varieties - oblong, round red smooth, beefsteak, plum, mini plum and cherry tomatoes. We also produce cucumbers and eggplants until early June."

"The season has been rather abnormal so far. Nothing has coincided with the estimates made at the start of the campaign. Of course we have had to deal with Covid, but then we have also had to deal with TBRFV, the new tomato virus that disrupted the planning for southern Sicily, where half of Italian table tomatoes are produced. The damage is immeasurable for the entire Sicilian socio-economic fabric. The most tangible effect was the alternation between periods characterized by copious productions with low prices followed by periods were the produce lacked and prices were high."

"Prices are now medium-low. The quotations for round red smooth tomatoes hover between 50 and 80 eurocents/kg, those of cherry tomatoes go between €0.60 and €1/kg, oblong tomatoes sell for €0.80-0.90/kg, beefsteak tomatoes for €1-1.20/kg, cucumbers hover between 30 and 50 eurocents/kg and eggplants between 35 and 40 eurocents/kg, except for specialities."

"Domestic and foreign big retail chains continue to be very interested about our products, especially since we manage to supply large volumes with a constant quality of produce that is healthy, safe, traced and certified."
