Apple and pear purchases and price per kilo drop March—April

In the four weeks to 18 April 2021, the take home fruit category has declined by -5.3% in dollar sales and -4.9% in volume sales versus the same time a year ago.

Apples
Apples declined by -10.7% in dollar sales and -8.5% in volume sales. One of the key contributors to the sales decline was because of a decline in volume purchased per occasion.

Other apples consisting of branded varieties such as Envy, Eve, Jazz, Kanzi, etc., saw a decline in both dollar and volume sales in the latest four weeks compared to the prior year.

Royal Gala was the only varietal to see both value and volume growth in the latest 4 weeks.

Pears
Pears declined by -14.6% in dollar sales and -1.8% in volume sales. Two of the contributors for this were the decline in average price per kg and volume purchased per occasion.

Other pears, consisting of varieties, such as Beurre Bosc & Corella pears etc., have seen a decline in both dollar and volume sales in the latest 4 weeks.

The other pears’ decline was driven by a decline in number of buying households and a decline in volume purchased per occasion.
