The supply volume of bananas is excessive and the prices are continuously falling. The sales conditions of import bananas is slightly better than the market for domestic bananas. Most import bananas come from Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Domestic bananas are produced in Hainan, Yunnan, and Guangxi.
"The import market does not look great, but the price of top-quality import bananas does still show a steady increase. The price rise of import bananas from Myanmar is clear to see. Top-quality bananas sell for as much as 4-4.5 yuan [0.62-0.69 USD] per kg. This is mainly because the banana production season is coming to an end in Myanmar and the supply volume is limited. The conditions in Laos are more stable compared to Myanmar. The price of bananas from Laos has not gone up or down much. As for bananas from Cambodia and Vietnam, these two countries have steadily expanded their share of the Chinese banana market in recent years. Their growth has been at the expense of the Philippines." This is according to Mr. Hu, a banana importer and retailer from Hunan.
This is also the time of year when bananas from Hainan usually enter the domestic market, but this year is different. According to Mr. Hu, "abnormally cold weather in winter reduced and delayed banana production in Hainan. The overall supply volume is quite limited.
Under these circumstances, banana production areas in Yunnan and Guangxi are in an excellent position to supplement the domestic banana market. The actual market conditions depend on banana variety and production area. The market conditions of Emperor bananas have been quite good, especially around Tomb Sweeping Day [April 4, 2021]. Around that date, market demand increased and the price went up.
