BanaBag® has won the Smurfit Kappa Better Planet Packaging Awards. It won the award for the most innovative and sustainable packaging solution in Europe. Banabag was designed and produced in Spain, specifically at the Smurfit Kappa Sangüesa plant. This patented solution that wraps and protects bananas stands out for its innovative and sustainable nature. It is 100% recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable and it will allow reducing the plastic waste generated in a plantation by more than 100 tons per year.

This packaging solution is a true revolution for the banana sector in areas such as the Canary Islands, as it surrounds and protects bananas in a natural and sustainable way. In addition, since it's compostable, it serves as a natural compost and helps control weeds after being used, thus optimizing the costs of herbicides and compost.
BanaBag is made of Kraft MG paper, one of the finest and most resistant papers, which acts as a natural insulator regulating the temperature of the bunches throughout the day and night and maintaining their quality even at high temperatures.
This solution was created to guarantee quality and correct bagging during the entire banana-growing cycle. It is a unique product for organic producers, as it protects the fruit from diseases and insects without the overheating issues that other non-biodegradable plastic materials have.

The Better Planet Packaging Awards were held virtually. The awards were hosted by Tony Smurfit, the CEO of Smurfit Kappa, and were attended by more than 3,000 people. 17 solutions from all the Smurfit Kappa plants in Europe were nominated for the awards.
