The Consortium partnered with Giro d'Italia 2021

New Tarocco clones for Arancia Rossa di Sicilia Igp

The Arancia Rossa di Sicilia Igp will be one of the sponsors of the Giro d'Italia this year. Giovanni Selvaggi, the president of the Consortium Arancia Rossa di Sicilia expressed his satisfaction with this prestigious partnership. "We are proud to pair the genuineness of our Arancia Rossa oranges with one of the oldest and most prestigious cycling competitions. It is a race with a high athletic and symbolic value, which is rooted in the hearts of all Italians. Together with the Giro d'Italia and the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, we are already involved in important projects that combine sports and food education."

Among other things, the president refers to Bici Scuola, an educational project aimed at elementary school students in the provinces served by the Giro d'Italia and all other competitions organized by RCS Sport. This collaboration will last until the end of 2021. The consortium is already working to remain a partner to an initiative that introduces young people to the themes of food education through the culture of cycling.

The promotional activities of the consortium have been excellent, but president Selvaggi, who has always been mindful of the dynamics of the sector, has had a few other things to worry about. The current season is not going so well, despite the added value of a brand.

A very difficult season
"It is still too early to quantify the added value of the PGI crop, but thanks in part to certain stances taken by the Consortium towards the large-scale retail sector, the crop is gaining recognition among consumers. The consortium's communication, protection and promotion of the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia has led to an increased trust and demand for the PGI-labeled crop. This is true not only among those who buy it in the supermarket or from their trusted greengrocer, but also among many entrepreneurs in the food and beverage sector."

"The season is slowly coming to an end and now. In addition to the small Sanguinello, we also harvest the Tarocco Meli, Sant'Alfio, Messina and in some areas the Tarocco Gallo. As for the future, the experiment set up by some members of the consortium to harvest the late Moro in some areas seems interesting. This represents an area of activity that should be carefully monitored and is part of the proposals we have been working on for some time. We are doing this with a view to revising our product portfolio to obtain an extension of the season of the Arancia Rossa di Sicilia. By including new Tarocco clones, we can make this possible."
