Alexandre Cancel, Cancel Fruits:

“It is too early to estimate the losses, we will know more at the end of the week”

The French kiwi season is ending this week for Cancel Fruits. The company will soon begin with kiwis from Italy and then from Chile. In terms of prices, this is a record year for kiwis. “We’ve never seen this before! The season went very well since we finished earlier than usual. The launch was difficult but from January, we have all caught up and even exceeded our monthly objectives,” explains Alexandre Cancel, sales manager of the company.

Production impacted by frost
While the kiwi season went very well, it looks like the upcoming cherry, plum and grape seasons will be more difficult for Cancel Fruits. With temperatures that went down to -5°C, the company based in Castelsarrasin (Tarn-et-Garonne) suffered from the frost episodes that hit France last week.

“Putting a figure on the damage is complicated at the moment. We are now going around the productions and our technicians are assessing the damage but we do not have concrete figures yet. What is certain is that our next three products will be impacted (cherries, plums and table grapes) but to what extent, we do not know yet. It is too early to estimate the losses, we will know more at the end of the week.”
