The wholesale and retail prices of lemons in Jiangmen, Guangdong, recently increased. The price of fragrant lemons doubled. The purchase price of lemons in production areas is currently around 15-16 yuan [2.30-2.45 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is an historical record for fragrant lemons.
This lemon variety was cultivated in Taiwan. The fragrant lemon is more elongated than regular lemons. The lemon is also larger and does not contain pips. The most unique characteristic, however, is the clear and sweet fragrance of the fruit peel, rather than the bitter fragrance of regular lemons. Furthermore, the flavor of the fragrant lemon is so strong they can easily be sliced and soaked to produce lemon water. That is why this lemon variety is called the fragrant lemon. Another name for this variety is the "seedless lemon".
Fruit-flavored tea is popular with young people, producing a huge market demand for lemons. However, the lemon production volume declined and that is one of the reasons why the price of fragrant lemons soared. The main factor in the decline of fragrant lemon production is the drought in Guangdong last year.
People in the industry say that the price was around 7 yuan [1.07 USD] per 0.5 kg between July and October last year, but dropped to 2 yuan [0.31 USD] per 0.5 kg last November. Now the price is as high as 15-16 yuan [2.30-2.45 USD] per 0.5 kg. Furthermore, consumer demand exceeds market supply. Even though the price is high, most local demand in Guangdong comes from restaurants and such. Their demand is stable and has not changed in response to the high price.
