Uwe Sakowski, Josef Stapf Großmarkt LLC:

"After a brief lull, demand for citrus has recovered"

After a week of spring-like temperatures, winter has caught up with Germany again - and correspondingly, demand for citrus remains high. "Because of the higher temperatures, we had a little lull in citrus of all ages, but now it's cold enough again and demand has recovered," said Uwe Sakowski, managing director of Josef Stapf Großmarkt LLC.

At Josef Stapf, Spanish and Sicilian oranges are currently on offer: "At the moment, there are mainly Tarocco and Moro from Sicily, as well as Sanguinello and blond oranges from Spain. Ultimately, however, both color and origin play a lesser role than an untreated peel. The preference for untreated fruit that is suitable for both consumption and further processing is clearly growing among our customers."

In terms of price, Italian goods are on average 25-30% more expensive than Spanish. "Especially regarding blood oranges, people are willing to pay a premium. With blond oranges, on the other hand, the quality of fruit from the Valencia region is so good that they are preferred."

Clementines also continue to be still well received. "We have now come to Orris and tangos from Israel and Spain. Israeli Orri clementines in particular are gaining market share. Sicilian tacles (Tarocco clementines) are an alternative to the established varieties." Price-wise, he said, clementines are stable: "Since Tango and Orri are licensed varieties, there is less price fluctuation in the market - so traditionally, this time of the season is very balanced."
