Retail rates for onions climb to Rs 55-60 after unseasonal rain

Onion prices, which were high throughout 2020, saw another spike on Saturday. Retail rates soared to Rs55-60/kg across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.

Consumers have curtailed purchases as high rates have skewed monthly budgets. Nerul residents said the kitchen staple costs Rs60. They reported shortages too. In Borivli, the bulb was expensive as well. Thanekars purchased onions for Rs55.

Wholesale rates rose to Rs35-42/kg at APMC Vashi market, pushing the retail price to Rs50-60. The bulb sold for Rs15-24 a month back.
