Guy Claessens, Fruit Vandepoel, Belgium

“The arrival of the first French asparagus and strawberries heralds the start of spring”

Spring has sprung at Fruit Vandepoel in Brussels, Belgium. "We're ushering in the season with great new products, such as French green asparagus. These are a good alternative to Peruvian asparagus, but with much more flavor. And France is, of course, a lot closer, so these asparagus are far more local," says Guy Claessens of Fruit Vandepoel. "The French Pertuis asparagus will also be available again soon. That's a true top product used by many top chefs."

“The strawberry season has begun again too. The first Lambada strawberries have arrived. We also have the special French Gariguette strawberries in our assortment again. These strawberries taste great. They're very different from the Spanish product that's currently on the market." Guy expects to receive hop shoots next week. "This is a typical spring product and only available for a couple of weeks."

There's also a switch occurring in vegetables at the moment. "The kale season's done. When it was so cold last week, there was a high demand for kale. Now that demand's over and people are looking more towards spring produce," Guy continues. "The French outdoor tomato and Belgian fruit vegetable seasons have started. We should have nice weather in the coming days. We think that will boost these products."

“The citrus and grape seasons are progressing very well. We can be satisfied with this season. We have a lot of blood oranges in many different varieties, which are in great demand. The South African grapes are also doing well and are of good quality. Just like the mangoes from Peru. Despite the excellent demand for the products, the current market's fairly calm. The hospitality industry closure has hit hard. We hope, for the sake of all parties affected, that we can quickly return to 'normal'," concludes Guy.
