As reported by sources from the citrus sector in the Spanish Region of Murcia and the province of Alicante in a statement, producers are receiving between 0.16 and 0.18 Euro per kilo of fresh lemons at origin, while the price paid for the lemons intended for the processing industry does not even "cover the harvesting costs", which according to the same sources amounts to 0.14 Euro per kilo.
For this reason, they demand that the administrations "provide direct aid to producers", given the great losses that both producers and exporting companies are suffering in a campaign that these sources have described as "ruinous".
The producers have described the current situation as "very severe", because "we won't be able to continue like this."
The processing industry plays a fundamental role in the citrus sector. For the producers, it is "highly necessary to be able to sell the surpluses of inferior quality products not suitable for fresh marketing."
"We are having a disastrous campaign and the citrus sector is gradually going bankrupt, so it is essential to urgently establish direct aid to the Murcian citrus producing sector," said the representatives of the regional citrus sector.
