Wilko van der Zwaard, Wilko Fruit:

"Good citrus sales, only lemons lag behind"

The Moroccan Nadorcott mandarin season is in full swing at Wilko Fruit in Breda. "So far the season has been going well. Last week, sales to the market traders were a bit quieter due to the frost, but the supermarkets and smaller shops have sold a lot," says Wilko van der Zwaard.

"We get a good supply from Morocco. The first weeks the volume consisted mostly of large sizes. Now the outside of the tree has been harvested and the more common sizes are being harvested. Prices are around 1-1.10 Euro each per kilo. We also had a good Spanish Tango-mandarin season under the Gaudias brand. That season is now over and a month ago we started with Turkish Tangos under the Unifrutti brand. We have these available until the end of March," Wilko explains.

"On the orange market, Spain has finished with the Navels and Navelinas and they have now started with the Navel Late. There is 20-25% less of this variety, which means that the Spanish are quite high in price. We have now started with the first Valencias from Egypt and that price level started a lot lower than last year. You can see the necessary shifts in sales due to Corona and the juice market is under considerable pressure. The programs towards the supermarkets are continuing to run well."

“All in all, the citrus market looks healthy, the only product group that is lagging a bit behind are the lemons, which are suffering from the disappearance of the catering market. But we are not complaining. Many of our customers have never had such a good year, think of market traders, retailers and also supermarkets. In that sense we can consider ourselves fortunate to be working in the fruit and vegetable business. But for the catering customers it is a very difficult year, that is clear."

Finally, a product that has been on the rise in recent years is pomegranates, according to Wilko. "They really benefit from the health trend. Sales are running smoothly and the mango is lagging behind. We have a nice program with Turkish pomegranates and want to continue that line towards a year-round assortment."
