Jean-Baptiste Pinel, Primland:

“All the varieties we sell are complementary to the needs of the consumers”

Primland offers a large range of products to its clients, including the green kiwis of Adour Red Label, PGI, organic green kiwis, Gold kiwis, Nergi kiwis and red kiwis. “Having such a wide range allows us to meet all the needs of our clientele. The consumer who wants a milder product will go for the Gold kiwis, those who are sensitive to the practicality will be seduced by the Nergi mini-kiwis, and those who like novelty and even sweeter flavors will go for the red kiwis,” explains Jean-Baptiste Pinel, manager of the company.

“Significant export competition”
This year, the competition on the export market is relatively tough. “We have suffered from the competition with the kiwis from Greece and Italy, very aggressive in terms of price. But thanks to the fame of our brand which is a guarantee of quality, we are resisting. The brand is indeed very popular in countries such as Spain, Belgium or Taiwan. On some markets with less history, it is less known and the effects of the competition are more marked.”

“The season of the Chilean kiwis looks promising”
When the season of the French kiwi ends, Primland will offer off-season kiwis from Chili to its clients. “The harvest will take place at the beginning of April and the first kiwis will arrive on the European market at the beginning of May. For the moment, production is going well. Pollination was good, the fruits are well formed, there was no problem related to the weather and enough water was available. Everything is under control and if it continues like this, the season looks rather promising.”

“We must replant in order to maintain the French production potential”
According to Jean-Baptiste Pinel, the biggest challenge facing the French kiwi production is the aging of the orchards. “The number of hectares planted has been stable for several years, or decreasing slightly. However, we must replant trees to renew the orchards in order to ensure the durability of the French production.”
