South African producer, exporter and European Marketer, Halls, is primarily known for its specialisation in avocados. This group, however, extends other exotics product lines too. According to Arjan Verhagen from Halls’ Dutch marketing office, these are encountering a consistent and growing demand. "Many people still don’t know, for example, that we airfreight perfectly mature mangoes. We receive these shipments in twice a week, freshly harvested from the orchards of our specialist grower partner in Peru.”
"With these mangoes by air, we can really distinguish ourselves on the market. Only our sister company in Rungis used to bring these in. But, in recent years, this partnership has evolved and with demand growing, we in the Dutch office now receive these weekly arrivals too. We have an especially good clientele for these airfreight products on the German market and as far afield as the Middle and Far East. We offer superior Peruvian air mangoes until the beginning of April. After this Peruvian campaign, we'll switch to select African supply," explains Arjan.
"Our supply remains constant, despite the general limitations that currently apply to air cargo space. Demand is good, and prices remain consistently above €30. The airfreight mangoes are safely packed in attractive boxes. This sleek presentation means they practically sell themselves.”
Arjan is satisfied with how sales went in the 2020 COVID-19 year. "I was far less optimistic in March. But sales have been better than expected. The coronavirus pandemic affected some clients more than others. The market has, however, become a lot more unpredictable," he concludes.
