Apple cultivation veering towards early and organic varieties

"Those looking to plant a new apple orchard must consider their location first, then choose the most suitable varieties. If not a member of a club, then great satisfaction can be achieved with innovative varieties or organic cultivation techniques. As we all know, the fact that an orchard is located at a high altitude or in the plain makes a huge difference. Over the past few years, apple cultivation in the plain has made considerable progress, but one needs to understand what the market wants and what segments need filling. An early variety such as Devil Gala has a productive window of over 15 days, obtaining excellent profit," explained Giovanni Zanzi from Vivai F.lli Zanzi.

Devil Gala is an early apple that ripens around July 25th in southern Italy and July 30th in Emilia Romagna. It is therefore 15-20 days early than other Galas, so there is the perfect gap for it.

"The tests we performed over the years showed us how, in late June, Devil Gala apples already reach 13° Brix in the Ferrara area, with a bright red uniform color. Devil Gala apples have a deep red color, are suitable for all cultivation areas, they are early and have excellent grades and Brix level. Trees are vigorous and very productive, fruits have uniform high grades and develop their color very early"

But a good variety is not enough, as it needs to be promoted well even without a club behind it. "Not being part of a club means more freedom, but also higher responsibilities. Those who sell it need to make it recognizable so that it does not get confused with other apple varieties. Consumers must know they are purchasing a fresh product at the height of summer, not something that has spent months in a unit or imported from overseas."

"There is a lot of interest for organic apples on a global level. Now there are many resistant or tolerant varieties that make it possible to employ organic cultivation techniques with good yields. We have created a dedicated division, Zanzivivai Bio, which specializes in the production of organic plants that are resistant or tolerant to the main diseases, highly productive and that grow fruit with an excellent flavor."
