Colombia Avocado Board will promote demand for Hass avocado in the US

Colombian Hass avocado exports registered a notable increase between January and September 2020. In that period, shipments totaled 50,999 tons and 95 million dollars, i.e. 43% more in volume and 34% more in value than in the first nine months of 2019.

According to data from the National Tax and Customs Directorate, from 2018 to 2019, Colombian exports to the United States grew by 306% in volume and 434% in value. The boom that the Colombian Hass avocado is experiencing in this market has led to the creation of the Colombia Avocado Board, which is part of the Hass Avocado Board (HAB), an organization that unites the entire world industry to raise and focus resources with the objective of expanding demand for Hass avocado in the United States.

Through the Colombia Avocado Board, the HAB will reimburse 85% of the taxes it collects from Hass avocado imports from Colombia to promote the consumption of this fruit in the US market. Mexico, Peru, Chile, and the United States (California) are also currently part of this organization.

The HAB also provides up-to-date information on supply and demand and, in turn, leads research projects in nutrition publicizing the benefits of Hass avocado.

“The negotiations to open the United States market took more than ten years and our first exports were made in November 2017. As of this date, there has been a continuous growth in exports that have placed the United States as the fourth destination after the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain. We hope that the establishment of the CAB will allow us to continue positioning the country and encouraging demand for Colombian Hass avocado in the United States market,” stated Jorge Restrepo, CEO of Corpohass.

“The Colombia Avocado Board will improve export and positioning opportunities by promoting the Hass avocado in the United States, one of the largest consumers of the fruit in the world. It is a clear example of the joint work between Corpohass, exporters, and importers who trusted this initiative, which opens a great door for promoting the country's product,” stated Flavia Santoro, the president of Procolombia.

In 2020, Colombia's Hass avocados reached new markets in the Far East, such as China and Japan, and negotiations for the opening of South Korea and Chile are already underway.
