Early Chilean cherry prices in China considerably higher

Recently, imported cherries, the winter fruit star product, made their way onto the Chinese market. It is reported that the price of Chilean cherries this year has risen considerably compared with the same period in previous years. Traders said the shipping price of a box (5kg) of imported early cherries at this time in previous years was about 1,500 yuan, while it has reached 2000 yuan this year - a record high. In addition, the arrived volume is less than half of last year. As a result, shipping prices in different channels vary, and retail prices differ significantly.

According to traders, Chilean cherries currently arriving at the Chinese market are all early varieties, which are transported by chartered flights to Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing, before being transported to other provinces. Affected by the pandemic, the volume of imported early cherries this year is small, and the price of chartered flights is much higher than last year, resulting in a sharp increase in the cost.

However, traders also admitted that the current high prices in the market are only temporary and do not represent future market conditions, and extortionate retail prices seen in some regions are exceptional. It is reported that the price of early imported cherries has fallen over the past days. With late cherries flooding into the market, retail prices will continue to fall.

Data released by the ASOEX Cherry Committee show that the production this season is expected to reach about 310,000 tons, or 62.07 million boxes (5kg), an increase of about 35.8% from the previous season. Ronald Bown, President of the association, said that China is still the main export market for Chilean cherries, especially as the Spring Festival will come later (February 12) in 2021, meaning a longer shipping window. However, given that the pandemic is still a major factor creating uncertainty, cherries sales this season may still be full of challenges.

Industry insiders predict that sea freight cherries are expected to arrive in China in mid to late December. With the arrival of the peak season, prices will gradually stabilize.
