This year, the summer season was marked by extreme heat and various heat waves. As a result, the harvest of the apples from the Alpes de Haute-Durance, the only Golden to currently bear the Label Rouge label, started ten days earlier than in previous years. The weather conditions of last spring / summer have also led to the final yields being slightly lower than those of 2019.
Sweeter apples with an attractive color
The heat, the sunshine (300 days of sunshine a year) and the altitude have further ensured that the apples have a higher sugar level than average. Cool nights block the breakdown of acids and ensure that the apples get a good sweet/sour balance balance. This year, all conditions have been met to allow the 3,000 hectares of apple orchards in the Alpes de Haute-Durance to yield what it is expected from them.
Given that the health crisis is making travel within Europe difficult, all pickers come from the area. The picking has, of course, been carried out with due observance of the necessary health safety measures.
New in 2020: growers even more visible to consumers
The growers of Pommes des Alpes de Haute Durance are now also listed on the official website. Every grower now has the option to add a presentation that provides more information about them and other activities. Geolocation also makes it even easier to actually meet the growers.
