Alba Lemon cooperative, the added value of an organic product

Tailor-made supplies for the European citrus fruits market

"We are specialized in the cultivation and marketing of citrus fruit and we focus on foreign markets. We supply high- quality lemons and oranges which are grown according to the specific requests of our partners," said Armando Albanese, director of the Alba Lemon cooperative, based in Noto, Sicily.

Armando Albanese

The customer is at the heart of the cooperative. That is why, over the years, a significant number of investments have been made in the improvement of our services to meet specific needs and requests.

"We are more familiar with the citrus sector than anyone else and this has helped us develop solutions that meet the needs of each market. We are able to deliver our crops to our regular and new customers thanks to a planned schedule that takes into account any unexpected events. Our sales department is staffed by employees who speak different languages, including English and Polish, which is a significant added value," said Albanese.

"About twenty companies are part of our cooperative and there are a number of external growers who bring their crops to the Alba Lemon Bio plant. We have all the certifications and we can guarantee consumers that our crops are organic and natural. We are also a member of the Syracusa PGI lemon protection consortium. Currently, the production prices for organic lemons with PGI designation are €0.70 per kilo.

The cooperative has more than 250  hectares of citrus grown to the highest quality standards. Annually about 800 tons of citrus are marketed by Alba Lemon Bio.

The most important markets are those of Poland, Germany, France, Austria and Slovenia. In addition, part of the harvest is regularly delivered to Italian retailers.

"We grow according to the natural seasonal cycles of the Sicilian lemon, which begins with primofiore, continues with maiolino, and ends with verdello. Orange cultivation begins in late October and ends in early June," concluded Albanese.
