The president of the Juguera de Akil, Luis Cetina García, said the company would process more than 6,000 tons of citrus fruits, including sweet oranges, grapefruits, mandarins, and sour oranges between the second week of September 2020 and February 2021 to make concentrate juice and oil, which will be sold both in the national and international markets.
Cetina said they were paying 1,200 pesos for a ton of sweet orange, grapefruit, or mandarin, and 1,400 pesos for a ton of sour orange, benefiting citrus producers in the southern cone of the State of Yucatan. However, he said, as the export demand for juice and oil increases, the prices paid to citrus producers could improve.
He also said that the intense rains being registered in the region benefited the citrus industry, as there will be more crops of the species they process and other citrus fruits, such as Persian lime.
Finally, he said that his term as president of the Juguera de Akil would end next November and that Freddy Dominguez Ake, who is currently the communal commissioner of Oxcutzkab, would be the new president of the Juguera de Akil juicing company.
