Bengala F1 watermelon remains leader in the early greenhouse segment in Spain

After more than eight years in the market, Bengala F1, the watermelon variety from Nunhems® (BASF's horticultural brand), continues to lead the early and extra-early greenhouse segment (transplants from late December to February 20). This is to thank to its great setting capacity in low temperature conditions and with short days. Even in these cases, the Bengala F1 guarantees an excellent production, with homogeneous fruits without hollowing issues, very common at this time due to temperature fluctuations.

"With Bengala F1, we provide peace of mind to the producers," says José Luis López, Watermelon Sales Specialist at BASF Vegetable Seeds, who also highlights the advantages of its homogeneous setting and sizes: "They can all be harvested at the same time," with the consequent cost savings.

To all this we must add another virtue: its precociousness. "The Bengala F1 is ready up to five days ahead of the rest of the varieties in its segment, allowing the grower to be the first to reach the markets," he says.

In addition to its external quality, with fruits weighing between 6 and 8 kilos, the Bengala F1 has an excellent internal quality, with an outstanding intense red color, great flavor and low presence of fibers.
The Bengala F1 is also adapted to early open ground cultivation in Almería, Murcia, Seville or Córdoba, where it yields very good productions and quality results.

Kalanda F1, the perfect combination
Kalanda F1 is the Nunhems® micro-seed pollinator for the early greenhouse segment. It has the same external appearance as the Premium F1, but with a larger caliber, between 3 and 4 kilos. With it, "we are providing the market with the necessary caliber in the early cycles with a pollinator that, in addition, does not suffer hollowing issues" and is capable of pollinating the seedless variety.

With Bengala F1 and Kalanda F1, BASF is managing to maintain its high quality standards in watermelons, guaranteeing the satisfaction of the producers, who have access to two varieties adapted to a very difficult growing cycle from a climatic point of view; but also of the marketers and distributors, who will be able to offer consumers the first watermelons of the season with a flavor and internal quality that will not disappoint them.
