Demand for green bananas slow in Romanian market

A lot of sectors in the fruit and vegetable trade industry have been affected by the ongoing pandemic. Luckily a fruit and vegetable supplier in Romania hasn’t had a lot of issues, as they could fall back on ta variety of services, like their ripening and cooling facilities.

According to Deniz Deletioglu, director of Romanian fruit and vegetable supplier Agricantus, the demand for green bananas in his country is particularly slow this year: “In Romania, we currently see demand for yellow ripened bananas, but not as much for the green ones. We have a ripening and cooling facility and these days there is demand from all over Europe when it comes to the green bananas. However, for some reason the demand is slow in the Romanian market. We deliver our produce directly to the supermarkets, so consumers probably just want ready to eat bananas. The green bananas only play well for the companies with good ripening facilities. Although we haven’t imported bananas this year, we generally import green bananas from Northern Europe, Greece and Italy.”

Although a lot of companies had to deal with negative effects of the pandemic, Deletioglu states that his company has been able to rely on their services besides supply: “Our company Agricantus is one of the oldest companies that sell Romanian bananas,1 and since our technical capabilities are very strong, we haven’t faced any real challenge over the pandemic. The companies we provide ripening and storage services to have not had any complaints. They’ve been happy we still provide our services, and have taken note of all the extra health safety measures we have put in place from the very first day the pandemic hit Romania. Naturally this was also done to ensure our workers’ safety. We’ve organized multiple educational meetings regarding the covid-19 virus and we’re proud to say none of our workers has tested positive up to this day.”

“Our cold storage facilities are made by the İSOCELL and EHO Companies. They have 416 pallet capacity of ripening rooms, 1,120 pallet capacity of special double layer plus cold storage regimes which are designed specially for bananas with extra ventilation and at these rooms Agricantus also stores the other fruits and vegetables in the best conditions. along with a 160 pallet capacity of plus and minus regime rooms which allows -20 degrees storage. The total manipulation and downloading area is 1200 square meters, equipped with a cooling system. The netting machines give Agricantus netting services as well.” Deletioglu concludes.
