New Zealand: Waimea Group boosts growth with lab company purchase

Horticulture company Waimea Group is continuing its growth with the purchase of the Hastings-based business Plant Propagation Laboratories Ltd. According to Waimea Group director Bruno Simpson, tissue culture production was identified as a successful method of bulking up plant material, as well as being easier to produce virus and pathogen free plant material. The new business will be named Waimea Plant Laboratories Ltd .

Simpson said the opportunity to purchase PPL from owner from Peter Bennet had come at a time when Waimea Nurseries required an increased quantity of tissue culture, propagated apple rootstocks and other plants, in order to meet the demands generated by the growth in horticulture and the garden industry.

In a statement, WPL were pleased to confirm the commitment of the business remaining in the Hawke’s Bay with all 16 staff retained. WPL will continue to produce the current product range for the existing customer base of nurseries and retailers.
