Data disclosed by ICE. Italy is ranked 19th

Rises and falls in fruit and vegetable exports around the world

Spain is ranked first in the world for fruit and vegetable exports in the period January-May 2020, with 6.68 million tons exported and a drop of 2.77% compared to the previous year. Italy, in the same period, exported 1.44 million tons, showing a decrease of 7.64%.

Such data was disclosed by Maria Ines Aronadio of ICE, during the presentation of Macfrut Digital (see FreshPlaza of 09/03/2020). Focus period was January - May 2020.

"While in terms of value Italian exports have increased by about 7%, they have decreased by 7.64% in terms of volume. The reduction was 119 thousand tons."

In absolute terms, Italy is ranked as the 19th largest fruit exporter in the world (click here for full table). Spain is followed by Mexico (-14%) and the Netherlands. Despite being a very small country, the Netherlands is third in the world thanks to triangular trade.

The decrease for this country is almost zero, being 0.27%, while the total quantity is 5.22 million tons.

Among the Italian competitors with different references, it must be mentioned that Egypt suffered a decrease of 3.74%. A great leap forward for Turkey, which exported more than 2 million tons with an increase of almost 11%.
