Tropical Storm Laura's strong winds have caused severe damage to banana crops as it passed through the eastern Cuban province of Guantanamo. Producers from the Yateritas area, in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, have reported that the storm affected more than 70% of the banana crops.
According to the local government television, the storm affected 209 hectares of banana from the Microyet Base Business Unit, belonging to the Yateritas Popular Council. The wind knocked down the banana trees in 135 hectares that were in production, stated an official of the state company, who added that they would recover all the banana they could to send it to the province of Guantanamo.
Wind damage has also been recorded in the Artemisa and Mayabeque provinces, where the storm mainly affected banana, cassava, and corn crops.
In addition to causing damage to agriculture, Tropical Storm Laura affected much of the country's electricity services, which are still down in many places, as well as its communications and water supply.
