The Thai Ministry of Commerce announced on the 11th of August that Thailand exported 1.4 billion USD worth of fresh durian in the first half of this year. That is an increase of 73% in comparison with the same period last year. One employee of the ministry stated that China is the largest export market for Thai durian. The export value of Thai durian export to China was around 1 billion USD in the first half of this year. That is a massive increase of 140% in comparison with the same period last year. Thailand also exported 207 million USD worth of durian to Hong Kong in the same period, which is an increase of 34%.
The overall surface area devoted to durian plantation in Thailand rapidly expanded as a result of Chinese market demand. The production volume significantly increased this year, but the price was also higher. In early May, China and Thailand organised special 'fruit trains' between production areas in Thailand and markets in China, to encourage the sales of Thai fruit in China. The trains crossed the border at Pingxiang and Dongxing in Guangxi. This is the first large-scale train transport of Thai fruit to China. The initiative opened up new sales channels between Thailand and China.
In addition to traditional retail methods, Thailand also seeks to develop cross-border e-commerce. Jurin Laksanawisit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, made a special appearance on a live streaming broadcast two months ago where he encouraged Chinese consumers to purchase Thai durian.
