The passion fruit production in the Spanish region of Axarquía has increased significantly over the past two years thanks to the Algarrobo-based company BioAlgarrobo, specialized in the production and sale of organic fruits and vegetables. In just two years, it has managed to quadruple the acreage, reaching a production of 45,000 kilos.
In the 2019 campaign, it started with only 4,000 m², although its goal is to exceed 20,000 next year. This has been stated by the managing director of BioAlgarrobo, José Carlos Varela.
In 2018, the company started trials to grow a Colombian purple passion fruit in the open ground and in a greenhouse. Last year, positive results were achieved for the first time, and this season the acreage has already reached 15,000 m², with producers obtaining an average price of 5 Euro per kilo of fruit. "We are achieving a production of three kilos of fruit per square meter and the profitability for the grower is enviable. Most of the passion fruit we produce is exported," says Varela.
The variety that BioAlgarrobo has gone for stands out for its great aroma, flavor and sweetness. "We think that we have found the right variety, although we continue to test others that do well in the area and that meet our requirements," says Varela.
He also says that the passion fruit produced by BioAlgarrobo is achieving great success. "We are the main producers of this tropical fruit in the province and we believe that it is a sector with a future, as long as the right varieties are chosen."
The greenhouse production season runs from May to August, although the plants, which last for several seasons, also produce some smaller volumes between January and March.
