Red onion from Acquaviva: entering foreign markets and retaining customers

"In addition to the various central and northern cities, such as Milan, Verona, Turin and Fondi, we also deliver our product to many fruit and vegetable warehouses in Southern Italy, but now our aim is to go beyond national borders and enter foreign markets - in which, as of now, we have only managed to supply some chains from Germany, Switzerland and France." So stated Caterina Papagna, owner of Agriconetto, a company that has been operating in the agricultural sector for over 20 years, but who 5 years ago decided to diversify his production, growing exclusively the renown red onion from Acquaviva delle Fonti.

"There are 10 total hectares planted for the 2020 campaign. The harvest, strictly manual, began ten days ago; but marketing will continue, if stocks allow, until late September. There is demand: for each destination we unload up to 5 pallets, but orders usually start to increase only from the end of July onwards. As for prices, we have recorded a 30% increase compared to last year".

"We are talking about a very sweet onion, which is well suited to any culinary use and which leads the consumer to make continuous use of it. A product rich in vitamin C, B vitamins and flavonoids, with a size starting from 400 gr and it goes up to 1.2 kg".

"On an agronomic level, this year we will certainly rely on higher yields and bigger calibers than last year. We transform part of the production into jams or onion creams, thanks to our company laboratory. These are excellent products, packaged in jars of 100 and 190 grams, which are used mostly as a condiment on cheese and pasta".
