Willy Dillen, Corina® pear coordinator

"We will pick more Corina® pears this year than last year"

“We will start the harvest of the Corina® pear again within a month. We are a little earlier than other years this year, but that is a good thing. The old Conference harvest is as good as sold out, so the Corina® pears are ready to go, ”says Willy Dillen, coordinator of the Corina® pear. “The price of the Conference is also currently at a good level, which means that we are also expected to be able to make excellent prices for Corina®. As far as the market is concerned, we certainly can't complain.”

Dillen also has little negative to say about the growing season. “We had a very good growing season with little to no frost damage. We are very positive about the size and quality and we are going to harvest a little more volume this year than last year, despite the fact that no replanting has taken place. There are no area expansions planned for the coming years. ”

“The Corina® pear is marketed exclusively by four recognised distributors, namely: Vergro, Bel’Export, Koen Vanherck and the Limburgse Tuinbouwveiling. If the pears are marketed in another way, this is not legal, ”says Willy. “Important markets for the Corina® are Great Britain, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Belgium, but Germany and France are becoming increasingly important. Sales increase in those countries every year. ”

The ambition of the group behind the Corina® pear is to sell the pear within 2 weeks. “The Corina® is a truly premium product. The first fresh pear before the Conference comes on the market. For a year now, the growers of the Corina® pear have been united in a non-profit association, and Pcfruit and VCBT provide support for the cultivation. The size is naturally a point of attention, but this year the growers have had no problems with that," Willy concludes.
