An overview of the situation with Luca Garletti of Mc Garlet

Avocado prices decrease slightly but steadily

The United States is the world's largest market for avocado consumption. Unfortunately, due to the health emergency, demand is currently shrinking. This is causing an increased availability of product in other parts of the world and the trend is of a slight, but steady, decline in prices.

In a nutshell, this is the worldwide situation analysis of the avocado market by Luca Garletti, CEO of the Italian company Mc Garlet specialized in exotic products. "Peru is the leading producer country in the world and has the United States as its reference market.  It is clear that, in this period, US consumption is in decline due to the health emergency, which has slowed down especially the Ho.Re.Ca channel. As a result, part of the Peruvian product is being diverted to Europe."

However, not only Peru is the producing country. South Africa has almost finished its Hass and is producing green skin avocado. The target markets are Japan, Asia and, to some extent, Europe.

"There are important production areas in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in West Africa as well. In these cases, the product is exported to Europe, but with some additional logistical difficulties. Their volumes don't tip the scales, but they do occur."

Bearing in mind that more product than average is arriving in Europe, and that the Ho.Re.Ca channel is still recovering, there is a slight, but constant, drop in quotations.

"It is likely that in July and August - added Garletti - this decline will continue, because there are no rapid changes on the horizon. However, it is essential to provide a ready-to-use product but also helping the consumer  come closer to discovering a product that deserves greater appreciation".

From this point of view, Mc Garlet has always stood out as an innovative company. The fruit pulp under the brand Only Avocado is made from fresh product and is suitable for many uses. "In the kitchen it can be used as a substitute for mayonnaise, such as in the preparation of sandwiches, or served with meat. Yet, with very different nutritional and healthy benefits!."

Only Avocado is a ready-to-eat product, made entirely of Hass avocado pulp packed in a 200-gram tray. The fruit, which has reached the ideal level of ripeness, is cold pressed and stored using the HPP (High Pressure Processing) process to keep its nutritional and organoleptic properties intact. Only Avocado has a shelf-life of more than 30 days and, in the production process, no colorant or additive is added to enhance its naturalness and purity.

Only Avocado has also been awarded the silver medal by the jury of the Macfrut 2018 Innovation Award, organized by Cesena Fiera and L'Informatore Agrario to highlight the best research and development solutions.
