At the moment, the Austrian early potato market is well supplied. Although in many places clearing work was repeatedly interrupted by rainfall last week, there is still a sufficient supply of domestic early potatoes for marketing. The warm and humid weather of the last few days has led to a corresponding increase in yields. Yields per hectare of 30 tons and more are now the rule rather than the exception in Eastern Austria. Domestic sales in domestic food retailing have recently been somewhat calmer again. Although sales in the catering and canteen kitchen catering sector have improved in recent weeks, they are still significantly below the previous year's level overall. Producer prices have continued to fall compared to the previous week.
In Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria, € 25,- /100 kg were paid at the beginning of the week. In the meantime, quite reasonable yields per hectare are reported from Upper Austria, although here too the harvesting work was severely restricted due to the weather. The prices also fell moderately. At the end of last week, up to € 40,- /100 kg were still being paid.
Increasing onion supply
The Austrian winter onion harvest is making slow progress. Time and again, the clearing work had to be interrupted in the last few days due to the weather. In contrast, the drying of the previously harvested goods is running at full speed. Accordingly, the available supply volumes are now generally well sufficient to meet the steady domestic demand. Exports are not yet being carried out. Producer prices declined compared to the previous week. At the beginning of the week, onions from the new harvest, cleaned and sorted in the box were usually paid between € 30 and 32 /100 kg depending on the quality.
No change on the carrot market
The situation on the carrot market in Lower Austria has not changed significantly. Harvesting operations had to be repeatedly interrupted last week due to weather conditions. The supply of early carrots is accordingly manageable and can be marketed in the food retail trade without any problems. There is no change in producer prices compared to the previous week.
