Howard Hansen - Hansen Orchards

Tasmanian apple harvest goes against the Australian trend

The apple harvest ended a month ago for Hansen Orchards situated in the Huon Valley in Southern Tasmania.

“We have had a good season with volumes up 40% on last year,” said Howard Hansen. “A lot of this was new orchards coming online but we also had a good growing season which gave us good sizes and more kilos of fruit. Other parts of Australia are still suffering from the drought conditions and some had trouble with hail, so we have been quite lucky here in Tasmania.”

According to Howard the market has been a bit up and down, “There was a spike at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, but that was just before we had volumes on the market. There was less demand as the schools and restaurants were closed but they are going back now so it will pick up now.”

Hansen Orchards mainly supplies the domestic with Jazz and Envy as well as Gala and Pink Lady apples, they also do a niche export of the Tiger Fuji apple into Hong Kong.
