Representatives of the Association of Potato Growers of the Republic of Moldova say that by the end of this week, the supply of young potatoes to the country's domestic market will increase significantly. As a result of this, wholesale prices will soon drop by 1-2 lei / kg, to 8-9 lei / kg ($ 0.46-0.52 / kg).
As in previous years, the average price of young potatoes in Moldova is likely to be about 1.0-1.5 lei / kg higher than in the previous harvest until late summer. The market will continue to receive only a limited volume of early potato varieties, while the bulk of the crop will be harvested in the fall.
According to Peter Iliev, chairman of the Association, this year's potato supply situation in the Moldovan market is better than in the previous two years. About 22-23 thousand hectares have been allocated to the crop in 2020, compared to just 19 thousand hectares in 2019.
The heavy rains in May and early June have given growers hope for an average yield of 25-27 tons / hectare in the most technologically advanced agricultural holdings. However, much will still depend on the summer rainfall (not all potato plantations in the country are located on irrigated lands).
