The cherry sector in Extremadura (Spain) has lost 45% of its production

"We are talking about many millions of euros in losses"

The spring's climatic instability has dealt a severe blow to Extremadura's cherry campaign. According to Emilio Sanchez, the president of the Regulatory Council of the Cereza del Jerte Denomination of Origin, 45% of the production in the north of Caceres was lost due to the frosts in April and the rains in May. Sanchez said that the greatest losses took place in the cultivation areas that were below 700 meters of altitude.

"We are talking about many millions of euros in losses," he said. "Right now, all the markets are neglected and eager to receive cherries."
