The EC modifies the regulation on MRLs after dimethoate was banned for cherries

EC Regulation 2020/703, published on May 27 in the Official Journal of the European Union (DOUE), modifies and updates the regulations on maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides after the existing authorizations for plant protection products with dimethoate and omethoate for cherries were revoked.

As specified in the regulations, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has not ruled out the risks that the exposure to residues of dimethoate, whose genotoxic potential cannot be excluded, and to residues of ometoate, its main metabolite, can have on consumers. As a result, it came to the conclusion that it was an in vivo mutagenic agent.
