Among the tomatoes grown in the Vega de Almería, there is a variety that has earned a great reputation thanks to its outstanding flavor: the Raf tomato.
The Raf are tasty, sweet, fleshy and aromatic. Their best quality is the balanced combination between sweet and sour, which has turned this product into a delicacy. They have a short season; they are planted in September and the harvest starts in late December. They can then be enjoyed until late May, when the last ones are harvested in Almeria.
The name Raf refers to the acronym for "Resistente al Fusarium" ("Fusarium resistant"). This resistance was one of the reasons why the crop became so popular. It is, therefore, a selection of traditional tomatoes and not a hybrid tomato, as many believe.
They are perhaps not the most visually appealing on the market, although the fact that they are not good-looking and perfect has almost become a guarantee of quality. In any case, it is food product that is easy to enjoy.
Although the season is nearing its end, it is still possible to enjoy one of the best agricultural products from Andalusia through companies such as Gourmet, which bring Raf tomatoes from the field to the consumers.
