Kochi: Tons of pineapple rotting in Vazhakulam market

Tons of pineapples were left to spoil at the Vazhakkulam pineapple market. It is reported that the pineapple taken for sale on Saturday found no customers in the market due to Sunday’s complete lockdown.

The rotten fruits were seen dumped inside the market. Usually, the pineapple farmers enjoy good sales during the Ramadan. But due to the lockdown, only one-third of the usual amount of pineapples was sold as compared to the previous years.

Vendors who have taken pineapples from the farmers were unable to sell them at the market. As the fruits are now no longer fit for consumption, both farmers and vendors are in crisis.

Vendors had to clear rotten pineapples from the market earlier also. The rotten fruits were taken to cattle farms to feed the animals. The vendors are struggling to dispose of the rotten fruits as the pineapple waste treatment plant is almost full.
