The sweet potato is becoming more and more popular in the Chinese market. Mr. Xiao Huang, a sweet potato supplier, recently talked about the Chinese sweet potato market: "Chinese market demand for sweet potatoes is growing every day and so does the annual production volume of sweet potatoes. The production season in north China is already over and the potatoes from south China are only just entering the market now.
"The overall production volume is not bad this year. Some sweet potato varieties show a significantly larger production volume this year, such as the Shadi 601. The main reason for this development is the fact that the weather has been excellent during this production season. These weather conditions were particularly favorable for the growth of the Shadi 601 sweet potato variety. However, the Shadi Watermelon Red sweet potato suffered a decline in production volume. That is because the Shadi Watermelon Red sweet potato variety suffered from disease at higher rates than other varieties. This variety is not easy to grow."
When asked about recent changes in the sweet potato market, Mr. Xiao Huang replied: "Market demand for sweet potatoes is currently higher than sweet potato supply. This is the main reason that the price is rising. The current price is 2.80 yuan [0.40 USD] per 0.5 kg. That is a relatively high price in comparison with other vegetables. The most popular sweet potato variety is the Shadi 601. That is because the appearance of this variety is more beautiful, the peel is smoother than other sweet potato varieties. This is one of the main reasons why Chinese consumers prefer this sweet potato variety over others. In addition, the Shadi 601 is bright red. The other two varieties that we sell are much sweet: the Shadi Watermelon Red, and the Shadi Purple Guijing No. 8, which is purple on the inside."
"We can supply sweet potatoes almost all year long. We sell sweet potatoes from production areas in north China and south China, which allows us to provide a stable supply volume. We will continue to develop our domestic market share, but considering the growing supply volume of top-quality sweet potatoes, we are also planning to export our products to overseas markets in the near future."
