The Chinese ginger market has not been stable in the last few weeks. Global demand is growing and the market price of ginger is rising.
Mr. Xie Qiaowei of Fujian Fresh Hui Trade Co., Ltd., a grower and trader specialized in Chinese ginger, recently shared his analysis of the current conditions in the Chinese ginger market: "The ginger market is less than ideal as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The domestic market price of ginger is not great. The main reason for this situation is that large buyers such as restaurants are still closed. In addition, intermediaries put pressure on the price, which in turn puts pressure on the market. The market prospects of Chinese ginger do not look good at the moment. As the outbreak of the corona virus is gradually brought under control in China, many companies are resuming operations and the economy begins to recover. The ginger market, however, is still quite slow."
"Most of our ginger comes from Shandong, Guangxi, and Yunnan. The production volume of small yellow ginger from Yunnan and white ginger from Guangxi both declined because of poor weather conditions. The impact of poor weather was particularly strong in Yunnan. The ginger production areas there first suffered from drought and were later affected by heavy rainfall. This reduced the production volume and made storage more difficult.
"The risk that small ginger would spoil in small refrigerated warehouses increased. Farmers had no other options but immediately sell their stock on the market. Market operations were already slow because of the COVID-19 pandemic and this added extra pressure on the sales of small yellow ginger. Furthermore, the production volume of Mian ginger in Yunnan and Guangxi also declined, but the product quality is better than last year, in particular in Shandong. We have our own processing factory and we work closely together with farmers, so that we can clean, select, and package ginger according to the requirements of our clients. We are also looking for opportunities to export our ginger to overseas markets. Our product quality is excellent and we have more than enough ginger in storage to satisfy overseas market demand."
Ginger from Thailand
In addition to Chinese ginger, Mr. Xie Qiaowei also imports ginger from Thailand. According to him, the sales conditions are quite good. The current supply of ginger from Thailand has recently been harvested. The ginger is very fresh and quite popular with consumers in Guangzhou. At the moment, Thailand has closed the borders to slow down the spread of COVID-19. There is no possibility to export fresh ginger along regular routes. The supply volume of ginger from Thailand is therefore limited. The price of fresh ginger from Thailand is thus quite high."
