Production has slowed down in Spain due to the conditions in which pickers must work in the field, as well as those of workers in the plants. The cost of transportation continues to increase, despite previous agreements with fixed prices. Besides, street markets are closed and sales in Spanish wholesale markets have also fallen.
"Despite this difficult situation, we continue working to be able to provide the sector with the necessary supplies, such as wooden containers and pallets," says Alberto Palmí, director of the Spanish Federation of Wood packaging and its Components (FEDEMCO). "Fortunately, our industry is considered essential, so our companies continue to manufacture wooden containers and packaging for the fruit and vegetable sector as expected, while complying with the preventive measures recommended by the authorities."
"The exceptional situation in which we have found ourselves due to the Covid-19 entails that our employers must ensure the safety of their workers and the supply to the population. For this reason, we have implemented all the control systems established by the health authorities to control, tackle and prevent its spread, while we continue to supply our wooden containers and packaging,” says the director of FEDEMCO.
Alberto Palmí also highlights that wood is an antibacterial material. In fact, the containers with the Grow Quality seal have just obtained the certificate for food use from the AIDIMME technological institute.
