Artichokes left in the fields in Sardinia

The Covid-19 pandemic is creating even more difficulties for the artichoke campaign in Sardinia. FreshPlaza talked about it with Salvatore Lotta, president of the Agricola Campidanese PO.

"Our artichokes are left in the fields as consumption is low and what little we manage to commercialize sells at €0.30 per head, i.e. a 50% drop. Most of the supply used to be absorbed by restaurants and local markets, but they are now closed."

"A small part of the production is shipped to the big retail chains but, in such a moment, clients are not looking for fresh produce but rather for bagged artichokes. The thing is we cannot send our produce to the processing industry as the variety planted (Romanesco) is not suitable for processing."

"Sardinian producers are facing an estimated loss of €20 million, which is quite a problem if we consider that the 2019/20 campaign has not been that positive."
