Camille Aguer, Prince de Bretagne

The French strawberry campaign has started

The first volumes of strawberries are now available at Prince de Bretagne, the cooperative from Brittany. These are Gariguette strawberries. “Our producers grow this variety in greenhouses, which allows us to have volumes from March. The production peak will be in mid-April which coincides perfectly with Easter,” explains Camille Aguer, product marketing manager.

The consumption of strawberries is not very high yet. “At the moment, the weather is not exactly favorable for strawberry consumption. But it all depends on the different regions in France.”

“One of the particularities of the Prince de Bretagne strawberries is that they are packaged directly after picking and sold and shipped to our clients on the same day. Their freshness is therefore optimal and handling is minimized. This allows us to sell a fruit which is nice and as fresh as possible.”

Prince de Bretagne produces about 600 tons of strawberries annually from three varieties: Gariguette, Mara des Bois and Magnum. The Gariguette is the main variety. This year, the cooperative plans to sell between 370 and 400 tons. “The Gariguette is the most well-known and the most widespread variety in France.”

Besides the strawberries from Brittany, some strawberries from the southeast and southwest of France will also be available on the market. They complete the range of Spanish strawberries available on the market since the month of February.
