Good demand and low supply for strawberries

"Demand for strawberries is increasing week after week but, for the moment, the produce is lacking due to the temperature changes in January that delayed the vegetative state of plants. Things will start improving next week," explains Vincenzo Padula, owner of P&G wholesale in Policoro (Basilicata).

"In the meantime, the Spanish produce has become available on the Italian market, though domestic strawberries have an excellent Brix level, color and shelf-life."

"One thing is certain: quantities and prices are higher than last year. Our main variety remains Candonga, of which we have harvested little over 100gr/plant so far. We supply a lot of markets in central/northern Italy with a price of €4-4.50/kg, i.e. around one Euro more than in 2019. We are pleased with the interest consumers are showing towards strawberries from Basilicata. The campaign is looking excellent, we are now hoping for the weather will be good."
