Start-up Agrosustain works with retail chain in test phase

Migros works together with start-up that combats mildew

Start-up Agrosustain, based in Vaud, that is currently developing a food-grade anti-mould agent, is working with Migros in the test phase.

A white powder obtained from a plant, dissolved in water and sprayed in a cold storage facility for fruit and vegetables, is intended to greatly reduce the formation of mold in the future - without affecting taste or ripening. This is the work of molecular biologist Olga Dubey from Agrosustain in French-speaking Switzerland: "Depending on the variety, fruit and vegetables stay fresh two to four days longer," Dubey was quoted as saying.

Migros has already been working with Agrosustain for two years, she continues. Migros has selected fruit and vegetables that are particularly susceptible to mould, with which Agrosustain is testing the product. Citrus fruits are being specially researched. This involves, on the one hand, the formulation of the product and, on the other hand, at what time and in what dosage the product should be applied so that there are no residues on the food sold.

According to Migros-Magazin, Agrosustain intends to apply for approval from the European and Swiss authorities before the end of this year.
