Market recovery is limited by high cost of transport

China: Price of bananas is coming down

Chinese banana production areas recently experienced significant fluctuations, but the overall trend went from stable to declining. The overall delivery volume was limited at first and only in production areas that were able to deliver bananas was the price still good. The price of bananas in Laos, for example, exceeded 5 yuan [0.71 USD] per kg because the production areas did not suffer from the cold and the quality of their bananas was great. However, later on the cost of transport increased and laborers were in short supply. Furthermore, some markets have still not resumed trade. This puts immense pressure on the bananas in storage.

The banana price in production areas in Laos first showed a stable rise, but later on began to fall. The transport conditions in Laos are quite good and the price of top-quality bananas quickly recovered. Bananas in production areas that did not suffer from the cold sold for as much as 5 yuan [0.71 USD] per kg, while bananas that slightly suffered from the cold sold for 3-4 yuan [0.43-0.57 USD] per kg.

Bananas that were severely affected by the cold sold for less than 2 yuan [0.29 USD] per kg. However, because the production areas in Laos specialize in green bananas, not ripe bananas, and the transport cost is high, the wholesale traders who import from Laos have to go through a lot of effort. In the end, this helps to decrease the purchase price of bananas from Laos.
