Leon van den Hombergh, Frankort & Koning

"Strikes, storms, and Coronavirus are making for a very empty Dutch melon market"

"This year is proving to be unusually challenging," says Leon van den Hombergh of the Dutch company, Frankort & Koning. "There is not only the combination of strikes at various ports and multiple storms. There is now also a question of how the shipping companies will deal with the problems at Chinese harbors. In short, all importers have to make weekly adjustments to be able to meet all their obligations."

"This week, too, we see that Storm Dennis has caused considerable delays in the unloading of different ships. Fortunately, we get melons from various countries. We can still, therefore, respond flexibly to all kinds of circumstances. And, of course, it is nice too when the market becomes truly empty. Prices can then rise to levels that are better for everyone. The Galia market is certainly nice and empty. Arrivals are divided up beforehand already. But watermelons also barely touch ground. They are selling at prices that can simply be called good."

The current spring-like temperatures mean melon consumption is rising sharply. "European retailers are now rapidly increasing their willingness to do marketing. Let us hope for a nice end to the overseas melon season," concludes Leon.
