In 2019, Costa Rica's banana exports reached 1 billion dollars. Last year, Costa Rica exported 120 million boxes of bananas to different markets, such as the European Union and the United States, positioning the banana sector as the leading national agricultural export sector.
Costa Rica has achieved sustainability in the cultivation of this fruit, with the utmost respect for workers and the environment. “We have many challenges ahead, such as climatic variations, trade barriers imposed by the markets, the static exchange rate, and the increase in APM Terminals port rates, which we hope are in the process of being solved. Another issue is the Fusarium R4T pest, which is already on the American continent in Colombia,” said Jorge Sauma, general manager of the National Banana Corporation.
During 2019, there was only a decrease of 3.8% in volumes, compared to 2018, and not a 35% decrease, as had been initially projected by the Foreign Trade Promoter.
