January is the key month in the sale of Almeria's tasty Raf tomatoes. The balance of prices paid at origin reveals that Vegacañada (Grupo Agroponiente) has been the leading company when it comes to the best prices paid at origin for this tomato, with an average of € 1,056 / kg. This figure is 23 cents higher than that of the next highest average price paid in that ranking (€ 0.828 / kg).
This price difference has been observed in every type of ribbed and Raf tomato. For the G-size Raf, Vegacañada has paid € 1.32 / kg, compared to the € 1.26 / kg paid by the second company. The G has been bought for € 0.77 / kg, which is 0.20 Euro more than the second best price. The GG or Double G has been purchased for € 0.93 / kg; 0.04 Euro more. The M has cost € 1.37 / kg, which is 0.43 Euro more than the next best price, and the MM or Double M tomato has been purchased by Vegacañada for € 1.73 / kg, which is 0.75 more than what was paid by the second highest bidder.
During this first month of the year, Vegacañada has sold 1.4 million kilos of Raf tomato, which brings it to the second place in the province in terms of volume.
For Antonio Román, Business Director of Grupo Agroponiente, “this is nothing more than proof of our clear commitment to working alongside our producers. In our company, we have aimed to make it clear for many years that producers are the base of the entire chain, and that seeking the best commercial destinations for their products is one of the cornerstones of our corporate philosophy. For us, it is a matter of pride to be able to say that we are the Almeria-based company that pays the most for the Raf supplied by our growers, and that it does so in a key month like January. The point is that our producers are the best and their prices must also be the best.”
