The World Avocado Organization (WAO) has reported that avocado consumption in Europe between 2016 and 2018 increased by 65%, reaching 650,000 tons. The entity expects the European demand for this fruit will exceed one million tons in a few years, i.e. almost as much as what the United States consumes today (1.1 million tons).
The president of Peru's Association of Hass Avocado Producers (ProHass), Daniel Bustamante Canny, stressed that Europe is a market in which avocado consumption can still grow. To achieve this, he said, it is necessary to continue conducting promotional campaigns, which are executed through the WAO (which brings together the companies from avocado producing countries that market this product in Europe).
He added that the WAO, whose end is purely promotional, was being led by ProHass this year. Europe's main avocado suppliers are Peru and South Africa, in addition to some companies from Mexico, Colombia, Spain, and one from Chile.
"We expect more Chilean companies will participate, as they are large suppliers of that market, especially during a period where the offer from Peru and South Africa has ended," he said.
Daniel Bustamante stressed that Europe is the main destination for the Peruvian avocado offer, as nearly 60% of the total is dispatched there. He also said that they wanted to extend WAO's experience in Europe to Asia.
